Review on www.dustygroove.com

Tremendous work from Billie Davis -- a lesser-known UK pop singer from the 60s -- but one that we'd rank right up there with Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw, and Dusty Springfield! Billie's career was cut short at the end of the 60s by a tragic auto accident -- but before that time, she cut some sublime singles that step out with a bold, powerful, and sometimes downright sexy little groove. Most of the backings are from the later years of Brit 60s girl pop -- and feature some snakey basslines, soul-inspired horn parts, and a soaring groove overall that really drives the tunes -- and almost matches the intensity of Billie's great vocal delivery. A few nice baroque touches creep into the mix, but the overall sound is still straight-ahead pop. The set features 20 tracks all pulled from rare singles -- and titles include a great version of "Living In The Past", plus "I Want You To Be My Baby", "Nobody's Home To Go Home To", "I'll Come Home", "Suffer", "Angel Of The Morning", "Love To Love", "Billy Sunshine", "Wasn't It You", "He's The One", and "VIP

We would like to thank our friend Simon Goddard for this lovely reveiw in 'Uncut' Magazine

Here are just a couple of responses from Billie's fans, about the new Spectrum release!

A 55 year old man, I've just been in tears listening to "Darling Be Home Soon" and "Angel of the Morning", a record which I wore out from both sides in the sixties and have heard neither song in their original form since. It is so wonderful to hear that gorgeous voice again. Now I discover I could have had a signed copy - oh well!

So fans, at long last we are\line getting our due by this recent and future release of this underrated British singer. I'm a fan of Brit Pop, especially the gals, all the way from sunny Florida!!

Billie davis Tell Him The Decca Years

She may have only had the one significant hit - a feisty rendition of The Exciters' R&B classic "Tell Him" - but Billie Davis remains one of the greatest British female vocalists of the 1960s. Her story reads like a Who's Who of Sixties pop. She was 'discovered' by the legendary 'Telstar' man Joe Meek, lived downstairs from original Rolling Stone Brian Jones, repelled the amorous advances of John Lennon, caused a tabloid scandal after a car crash involving The Shadows' Jet Harris which saw her dubbed "the scarlet woman of pop", and played with members of Led Zeppelin and The Moody Blues.\line\par While her chart successes were few, forty years on Billie Davis remains one of the most collectable artists of her day. Tell Him is the first time the bulk of her prime on the Decca label has been issued on CD. As well as the hits - 'Tell Him' (No 10, January 1963), 'He's The One' (No 40, May 1963) and the northern soul favourite 'I Want You To Be My Baby' (No 33, August 1968) - this unique collection features the near-misses 'Angel Of The Morning', 'Wasn't It You' and `Make The Feeling Go Away', as well as forgotten B-sides and tracks from her highly sought after eponymous Decca LP from 1970, including covers of Jethro Tull's 'Living In The Past' and Neil Diamond's 'Love To Love'.\line\line Compiled with the co-operation of Billie Davis herself, Tell Him is a testimony to an unsung heroine of '60s pop whose reassessment has been long overdue.
